Why is India the World’s Third-Largest Beef (Buffalo) Exporter? The figures are shocking!
India’s Shocking Position in Buffalo Meat Export
India is the world’s third-largest exporter of buffalo meat, and it’s estimated that we will maintain this significant position for the next decade. This fact has been revealed in a joint report by none other than the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This figure might be shocking for many people, but it reflects a major economic truth about India’s agriculture and livestock sector. It is important to understand that this export is not Cow Beef, which is legally banned in India, but rather Buffalo Meat.

What do the FAO and OECD figures indicate?
The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2017-2026 report, released this week, provides detailed information about India’s meat exports. According to the report, India exported 1.56 million tonnes of meat last year. It is estimated that India will contribute 16% to global exports by exporting approximately 1.93 million tonnes of meat by 2026, thereby strengthening its position as the world’s third-largest exporter. This export mainly goes to Asian and African countries. As an Indian blogger, this figure reflects India’s global economic presence, but it also indicates that we must continuously pay attention to the quality and transparency of our exports.
The Reality of Exported Meat: Is It Beef?
The report did not specifically mention the type of meat exported, but it is clear that the majority of the exported meat is Buffalo Meat. This is evidenced by a point given in the report, where the word ‘buffalo’ was used for imports made by Myanmar from India. In international trade databases, the term “beef” is often used as a general category for both cow and buffalo meat, which creates confusion regarding Indian exports. According to the OECD database, India also imported 363,000 tonnes of meat last year, and it is estimated that this volume will also remain the same in the coming decade.
Global Meat Trade and India’s Role
According to the FAO report, the total world meat export in 2016 was 10.95 million tonnes, which is expected to increase to 12.43 million tonnes by 2026. India’s role in this growing global demand is very crucial. The Outlook Report has ranked Brazil as the world’s top meat exporter, followed by Australia in second place. India maintains its strong position in third place after these two major global players. From the perspective of a CA (Chartered Accountant), this export is an important pillar for India’s foreign exchange reserves and rural economy, and it needs to be encouraged while staying within the correct legal and cultural frameworks.
